CARA’s National Fit4All Expo

17 May, 2017

Five-time All-Ireland winner Aidan O’Mahony was the star attraction at CARA’s National Fit4All Expo last week, as hundreds of participants took the chance to “Dance WithThe Stars”.

The Kerry star, who’s garnered a huge new audience of fans for his quick-stepping performances on the RTE dance competition, was joined at the Expo by luminaries such as Olympic medallist John Treacy, Minister of State for Disabilities Finian McGrath and Operation Transformation leader Chris McElligott.

Fans were thrilled as Aidan took to the floor at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena to join them for a Zumba dance class.  And there were huge cheers as O’Mahony was presented with his Glitterball award for winning “Dancing with the Stars”.

“It was great to get the replica trophy in my hands at last’” said O’Mahony.  “The real trophy was taken from me for safekeeping as I left the dancefloor on finals night. I now have a tangible keepsake I can bring around schools, and give the kids something – other than me – to get pictures taken with.”

The Kerry legend is patron of CARA, the organisation driving the National Fit4All Campaign and Expo. The Fit4All Campaign is aimed at increasing awareness among people with disabilities, their families & carers and disability services on the benefits of regular exercise, healthy lifestyles and opportunities within the local community. It also aims to highlight current programmes being run within leisure centres across the country which are open to people with disabilities to attend.

Aidan O’Mahony added:  “I’ve spent all my life in sport.  Sport has given me so much.  It’s wonderful now to get the opportunity to encourage people of all abilities to get involved in physical activity, and to work with CARA and leisure centres around the country to make sure they’re accessible to the entire community.”

“Throughout the Fit4All week, we are inviting leisure Centres, fitness facilities, community halls, professional trainers etc. around the country to open up their centres and invite individuals with disabilities to participate in their programmes and to try out everything within their facility” – Brenda O’Donnell, Inclusive Fitness Coordinator, CARA.

“Our National fit4all Expo showcased a wide range of fitness classes, programmes and equipment in a bid to let individuals with disabilities and professionals working in the fitness sector know how easy it is to make inclusive opportunities available within their local centres or facilities. “– Niamh Daffy, Managing Director, CARA.
