Irelands’ Leisure Industry Celebrates National White Flag Quality Awards

Leisure and Fitness professionals from all over Ireland gathered in Salthill Hotel in Galway on Friday night, 14th November, to celebrate the annual Ireland Active National White Flag Quality Standards Award event.  These  awards are the main social event in the calendar year for those working in the leisure industry, and was attended by over 300 delegates.

The White Flag National Quality Standard, grades facilities’ operational standards, similar to the Blue Flag award which classifies Ireland’s beaches, and it is fast becoming the most sought after accolade in the leisure industry! It is the only industry specific award for the Irish Leisure and Spa Industry.

The White Flag National quality standard is based on the 3 essential areas when operating any leisure centre or spa: Safety, Hygiene & Maintenance and Customer Care. The standard is designed to encourage continuous improvement and it is categorised into three levels for the leisure centre sector:  Gold, Silver and Bronze. During 2014, Ireland Active introduced a new section for the hotel leisure centre sector.  This has been received very positively nationally. This section has 2 levels – Diamond and Emerald.

Christine Moloney, Chairperson of Ireland Active said “The White Flag National standard is a best practice management framework to provide good quality facilities and services to the consumer in a safe and hygienic environment. Every consumer should be aware of the professional standards required and quality mark in the leisure facilities they attend”.

There were overall winners of the year presentations in 5 categories for their achievement in reaching the pinnacle of the industry during 2014.

The overall Leisure Centre of the year was announced as Shoreline Leisure Centre – Greystones and the award was sponsored and presented to them by Mc Sport,  Bray.
The overall Hotel Leisure Centre of the year saw a tie for first place – Dalata group’s Dublin Citywest Health & Leisure Club and Cavan’s Zest Hotel & Leisure Centre, and this award was sponsored and presented to them by Podium 4 Sport  based in Clonshaugh.

The winners in the Customer Service category in the Hotel sector and the Leisure sector respectively were  The C-Club Leisure Centre in Westport and the Kingfisher Leisure Club in Waterford.

The industry Supplier of the Year as voted by members of Ireland Active was announced as Complete Leisure Supplies Ltd. based in Celbridge.  Mr Stephen Ross of CLS said ‘this is a great honour and I am truly delighted to receive this award from the members of Ireland Active”.

Barry Walsh, President of Ireland Active said “The Awards night is a fantastic way for our Ireland Active members to not only acknowledge  their teams for the excellent job they undertake daily in each centre but also to be recognised amongst our peers in the industry.”

The awards dinner took place following a highly successful annual convention attend by over 120 day delegates. The convention delivered presentations and consultation opportunities for key areas of concern for industry, such as the importance of water quality and hygiene in public pools, human resources & risk management, and the critical importance of the support of the Register of Exercise Professionals in Ireland.
